En 1949, Carmen Martín Gaite sufrió un episodio de fiebres muy altas que la introdujeron en un laberinto de delirios e imágenes oníricas. De aquella experiencia surgió El libro de la fiebre, un texto poético, surrealista, en el que trataba de rescatar las fugaces visiones que había tenido. Su entusiasmo por publicar lo escrito se tornó desilusión al comprobar que la gente de su entorno no valoraba positivamente su trabajo, y el texto quedó inédito casi en su totalidad, guardado en el «taller de la escritora», como ejemplo de escritura fantástica en ciernes. En 2007, ya fallecida Martín Gaite, vio la luz este primer ensayo suyo, en el que se vislumbran muchos de los temas que la autora salmantina desarrolló en su obra posterior: el simbolismo de objetos y lugares, las difusas fronteras entre el sueño y la realidad, la construcción del yo a través de la memoria, la reflexión sobre la escritura; Todos estos motivos nos remiten a su mundo narrativo, y permiten al lector incondicional asomarse a los inicios de una de las grandes autoras del siglo XX español.
